About the Apartment

The Space

This is a proper apartment in the middle of Grindelwald, not a converted hotel room or a chalet twenty minutes from the village. You step out the front door and you are on Dorfstrasse, the main street, at 1,034 metres elevation. The train station is two minutes down the road. The Coop supermarket is three minutes in the other direction. The Firstbahn gondola, which takes you up to First and the famous Cliff Walk, is five minutes on foot.

Inside, the apartment has two bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and a great Stube — a traditional Swiss wood-paneled living room that gives the space its character. The kitchen has an espresso machine, induction cooktop, full-size fridge, and a dishwasher — so you can cook breakfast before an early hike or put together a proper dinner after a day on the mountain. The Stube has a smart TV and Bluetooth speaker, and the bedrooms have quality mattresses with blackout curtains for those long summer evenings when the light lingers until ten.

The small balcony faces the Eiger North Face directly — the 1,800-metre limestone wall that has defined Grindelwald's identity for centuries. Morning coffee here, watching the first light catch the summit ridge, is the kind of experience that makes a trip feel different from ordinary travel.

The Location

Grindelwald sits at the foot of the Eiger in the Bernese Oberland, and this apartment is in the exact centre of the village. That matters more than it might seem. In a mountain resort, being in the middle means you can walk to everything: the trains, the gondolas, the restaurants, the shops. You do not need a car, and you do not need to wait for a bus.

From the front door, Grindelwald's BOB train station is a two-minute walk. Trains run every half hour to Interlaken Ost (35 minutes), where you can connect to Bern, Lucerne, or Zurich. In the other direction, the train goes up to Kleine Scheidegg, the pass between Eiger and Lauberhorn, and from there to the Jungfraujoch — the highest railway station in Europe at 3,454 metres.

The Grindelwald Terminal, the modern transport hub for the Eiger Express tricable gondola, is about eight minutes on foot. The Eiger Express takes you to Eigergletscher in fifteen minutes, connecting to the Jungfrau ski area in winter and hiking trails in summer. The Firstbahn, Grindelwald's other main lift, is a five-minute walk in the opposite direction. Between the two, you have access to over 200 kilometres of hiking trails and extensive ski terrain without ever starting a car engine.

The Experience

Grindelwald is not a manufactured resort. People live here year-round. The village has a real grocery store, a pharmacy, hardware shops, and bakeries alongside the outdoor gear stores and fondue restaurants. In winter, the slopes above the village carry some of the best intermediate skiing in the Alps, and the Lauberhorn World Cup downhill — the longest and most famous on the circuit — finishes right in town. In summer, the hiking is extraordinary: the trail network stretches from gentle valley walks along the Lutschine river to exposed routes around the base of the Eiger.

What makes this apartment work is the combination. You get a well-equipped, comfortable space in the centre of a real mountain village, with one of the most recognisable views in the Alps from the balcony. You can hike all day, come back, cook dinner, and sit outside as the Eiger turns pink in the last light. You do not pay platform fees. You communicate directly with the host. It is, we think, the right way to experience Grindelwald.
